Here're my first four answers to[info]disc_sophist's interests meme. Drop me a line in the comments, and I will pick seven of your interests for you to explain.

1. My interest in Brehon Law is about ten years old. It first skittered across my radar in Peter Tremayne's mysteries featuring Sister Fidelma. While I feel that the quality of Tremayne's writing has gone downhill (he crafts a good intellectual puzzle, but his interpersonal relationships are crap), the interest in the law system of pre-Angevin Ireland has stuck. It was, in many ways, a law system ahead of its time. Women had significantly more rights under it, and all persons were bound to it, including the kings, long before English barons foced the Magna Carta on John. It also has the interest of something completely alien. The Roman legal system, which has so colored the legal systems of Europe, Great Britain, and by extention, the United States, never made it to the place they called Hibernia, and the English managed to pretty much completely extinguish it, even in the West. So it's a completely different kind of legal system from what we're used to.

2. Oh, Lord, I'm being pried out of the aging-fangirl closet. I got interested in herbalism when I read Mercedes Lackey's Owl Mage Trilogy (I'm one of about four people who actually liked it). The female lead is a village herbalist, and I was intrigued, so I started looking things up. Then I got involved in the SCA which dovetailed nicely into this interest. I like it because way, way, way deep down in a locked room I don't like to talk about, I keep my Survivalist Nut. I like knowing things that might help me in case of dire emergency. (Yeah, I watched too many "Kids/Animals Stranded in the Wilderness" Disney movies as a kid.) That and I like the idea of making useful stuff (TM) out of things I can grow in my backyard. To complete the hattrick, my family doctor growing up was an osteopath, and I while I firmly believe in better living through pharmacology in case of multiple root canal, I don't actually like to take medication. I'll do it if I need to, but it's difficult for me to form the habit.

3. Oooh. Lighting. Pretty. 'Nuf said. :) It's like painting, but with light!

4. Ah, meta jokes. I love it when fandom takes a poke or twelve at itself. For example, at one point in Bones, David Boreanez's character calls for back up to the--wait for it--Hyperion Hotel. And I adored the way poor Ando was kept hanging at the end of Hiro's missives from the past, much as we were left hanging at the end of each episode of Heroes. They're just goofy, and they amuse me.

Sigh. It is late, and I am pooped. Old Irish, paleography, and Rupert Giles shall have to wait 'til tomorrow.
