Updates on what's going on here, here and here.

I've been reading up on what's going on and I have to say I have no sympathy for the protesters whatsoever. I really don't understand what they thought would come of the protests. They feel angry and betrayed because they were arrested for shutting down a major educational complex for nearly a week? Someone missed a memo here, and I don't think it was me. The administration has tried to negotiate, offering the students a voice on the board of trustees and giving them input on the hiring of the new provost. They should have taken it. Now all they have--and all they will ever have--for their trouble is their "badge of honor" booking numbers and a lack of education.

Really, it's getting harder and harder to not see the whole thing as one huge temper tantrum.
They probably watched what happened at Columbia U and thought it would be like that. That they wouldn't get punished. The best statement I heard was someone saying that places of learning are more and more becoming the realm of intellectual savages.

Yes and no. When I'm not due to teach in 18 minutes, I'll expand. I have a fun medieval university story. The first faculty strike! I know you're just holding your breath.

Columbia? I know there were protests at AU last spring, but they didn't reach anywhere near these...lows.

Columbia pitching fits is becoming non newsworthy in some places. I think the Galludet students really think the Apocalypse is coming in January. So who cares about academics? That community has always beeen polarized around these isssues, and the deaf community I know is similarly fractured. Oddly enough, the folks I know who became deaf could care less, while the congenitally deaf ones are more interested. FWIW I know/knew at least one faculty memeber at Galludet.
