One time (as a kid) when I was visiting my cousin in Long Island we went to visit a friend of his. My cousin warned me that his friend was very loud, and "had no volume control", meaning it was pointless to ask him to speak more quietly. It turns out the parents were just as bad. I don't know why they were so loud (they didn't seem hard of hearing at all) but I was definitely glad to get out of there.
