Date: 2007-12-20 08:30 pm (UTC)From:When I discuss theology and dogma and cultural bases for traditions, I don't want people to keep their mouths shut. A civil tongue in that head, yes, but not closed mouths.
On the other hand, when I post something along the lines of, "Hey, look, something I can be proud of as a Catholic and not have to deal with popular misconceptions fed by hierarchical idiocy," the smart-mouthed reply is not welcome.

Date: 2007-12-20 09:12 pm (UTC)From:FWIW, this post actually got me to read the comments on the previous one... heh. Y'know, I'm not surprised. I really don't believe "Pope" is a title one gets through some good ol' cardinal network. Can't get there without being a pretty good guy.
(Well, maybe these days. Ancient history might have proven me otherwise, Philistine that I am.)

Date: 2007-12-20 09:16 pm (UTC)From:There has been a long line of bastards--both in the literal and pejorative senses--sitting in the Fisherman's chair.
This statement from this pope is especially pleasantly surprising, though, because when Benedict XVI was Cardinal Josef Ratzinger, he was head of the
InquisitionCongregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and as conservative and reactionary as they come.no subject

Date: 2007-12-20 09:37 pm (UTC)From:No, but the problem arises when they're the previous pope's bastard. And are running around making more. (The fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth century Vatican could be quite the swinging place under the right pope.)

Date: 2007-12-20 09:58 pm (UTC)From:Well, I'd still claim that the literal bastards were bad only when they became perjorative bastards. (So now I'm a Philistine pedant!)

Date: 2007-12-22 05:20 pm (UTC)From:As far as this filter, I'd like to be included because I'm particularly interested in the times you are struggling with something the Church is doing. I ultimately decided not to practice due to negative experiences, so seeing you "fight the good fight" is heartening and reminds me that maybe I should think about returning as an adult that can work for positive change.
