Believe it, or not!
On 28 December we found out the the wee kidlet is of the feminine variety! I'd be pleased as punch either way, but I'm particularly tickled that
arakasi1 & Mrs. Arakasi1's and
severus_bracae &
strawberrykaren's boys will have a wee girl to boss them around. Also, she has all her fingers and toes and a spleen and everything. We're still working on a name.
On 29 December, we moved. The house is outstanding. A few hiccups here and there, but nothing that the management company hasn't seen to immediately. If you're moving in the Baltimore area, I cannot recommend Always Moving enough. They were fast, well mannered, efficient, and all around awesome. However, remember that rotten cold I had? Yeah. Despite the fact that I did very little actual physical labor, I was literally exhausted. I could not get out of bed the next morning. Thank goodness
reportergirlkes and her fella were able to help
torberg get the last few things out of the house. I had a heck of a time even sitting up. Which led to...
On 31 December, I went to the new PatientFirst on the Bayview campus. Another outstanding experience. In and out inside of an hour. An upper respiratory infection was diagnosed and antibiotics prescribed after the doctor determined which one would a.)not set off my penicillin allergy and b.)wouldn't interfere with The Girl (as she is, for the moment, known).
So back home and back to bed. We missed The Annual New Year's Thing for the first time since I started it back in 2000, which made me a little sad. As
torberg and I went to bed, he complained of not feeling well. Uh-oh.
As of Wednesday morning (2 January, for those of you keeping track), he still wasn't feeling good. We assumed he had finally caught my plague. But because, between the move and the holidays, he'd missed quite a few days of work (some of which were unplanned), we were back to PatientFirst. It was one of the best decisions we've ever made, because after he was done scaring the crap out of the staff with a resting pulse rate of over 90, and a chest x-ray, the doctor determined that if he didn't have pneumonia already, he had something that could easily turn into pneumonia. Home and to bed for both of us for the rest of the week.
On 6 January, we finally used the gift certificate my brother gave us for Christmas two years ago and went to see Tamburlaine. Wow. I really loved all the performances, especially the first Persian emperor's. Witty and mincing and a complete and total fop. Avery Brooks was, well, Avery Brooks. He has a better sense of humor than a lot of people realize. No, he's not really an actor meant for comedy, but he conveyed all the different facets of what could be an incredibly monolithic character, including a wicked, dark sense of humor.
Slowly but surely, things are returning to normal. Box by box, the cardboard edifice is slowly crumbling. Since my due date (14 May) falls right around CUA's final exam period(6-10 May), and sometimes babies come early, I've taken a leave of absence for the Spring semester. I'm also only teaching two classes at PGCC, a 101(composition) and a 110 (current events-flavored composition II). This is an incredible relief. Last semester I taught four classes, and took one six-credit class. And was sick as a dog through most of the first trimester. Yeah, I was a little strung out by the end. I'm kind of surprised it took until Christmas Eve for me to catch something nasty.
My plans are fluid, for now. Half-schedule this semester, summer "free" (ha), Julius Caesar, and then we'll see. The child care boogie man has reared his head. The nifty daycare center we thought Bayview had has turned out to be a preschool. Which will be great...when The Girl is three. So we'll have to see if the cost of daycare will outstrip what I can make as an adjunct. My CUA plans will probably be no more ambitious than the 40-page research paper required by the department (required to be overseen by two faculty members from different departments), and won't be started upon until at least September.
Additionally, I need to start getting my behind to church regularly. First of all, and most importantly, I miss it. Or at least the peace I get out of it. Secondly, if I want the option of having The Girl baptized in the church, I need to be a member of a church in good standing. I'd really like my dad to do the ceremony. My mom has gone surprisingly hidebound on this, saying I really "should" have her baptized in the church. In the past, people stayed in one church and the priest who baptized them also administered their first communion and was present at their confirmation. That's just not the way it is anymore, and I want The Girl to have a connection to the person who initiates her into the church. And I would really like for that person to be the most faith-filled person I know. So we shall see how that goes. Dad's done a baptism in a church before, the the Franciscans at the church I go to are pretty laid back guys.
Gah. One in the morning. I'm off.
