Roger Ebert has pretty much summed up what everyone else has said, quite entertainingly, I might add. The description of the scene involving soot and the "wrong neighborhood" makes me particularly queasy. That is not what the Duke boys--not even Coy and Vance--were all about. No wonder Tom Wopat, John Schneider, and Catherine Bach stayed well away from it. Denver Pyle must be spinning in his grave.

Actually, the leads, be they Bo and Luke or Coy and Vance, did very little comedy. They were the leads. The Dukes were big and strong and valiant, but not too bright. That's okay. That's what they had Uncle Jesse and Daisy around for. The comedy hinged on Boss Hogg and Rosco. And that may be where the movie makers went wrong. (Of course, I'm prejudiced--Rosco has always been one of  my favorite television characters. James Best is just outstanding. He also has a 50+ year career and is still working, bless him. If I ever get a basset hound, she will be named "Flash.")

Catherine Bach, by the way, was a tall (okay she's 5'8", but that's still no tiny 5'4" Jessica Simpson), well built woman with regular ol' brown hair. She was a healthy, strapping young woman who could throw a good punch, if I recall correctly. And she still had a good fraction of pubescent America either panting over her or wanting to grow up to be like her. My brother had a toy General Lee. I had Dixie, Daisy's jeep. Yeah, she wore cut-offs so short they were eventually named for her, but you'll notice the Hogs Nest never seemed to need a bouncer.

In other news, I discovered that I can be bought and sold for chocolate hazelnut gelato.

For the love of God, whatever would possess you to do such a thing?

Oh, I didn't actually go and see the movie. But when Ebert, CNN, and the Washington Post all agree on something, I'm generally smart enough to take the hint.
