icewolf: snowy wolf (academic terms)

Just as a sample of the inanities of the administration of academia, here is the re-statement of a course-evaluation commitee's assignment, by that same comittee. At least I think it is. The word "Assignment" is at the top of the page. However, this doesn't seem to be an assignment, per se. I'm not sure what the heck it is.

To maintain classroom autonomy and because the [mumble-mumble] committee has determined that all [mumble] sections require either a final exam or an analytical paper, which, when compiled together, encompass all of the outcomes, we have decided the following: We will assess [mumble-mumble] using the course-embedded papers and/or exams that require students to analyze historical periods..., themes, and/or literary devices...with research in rlation to cultural moments in [mumble-mumble-mumble]. That is, students will have to contextualize a text(s), examining its historical period, theme(s), and/or literary elements. This can be done through a single or multiple papers or an exam.

Huh what now?

*bang head*

(And WHY can I not indent a portion of the text without indenting the whole damn entry?! GAH!)

It sounds like the <blockquote> tag is what you're looking for. This:

<blockquote>
<i>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Nullam sit amet ligula non nunc congue dictum. Nunc lobortis sem eu odio. Sed lobortis sapien a erat. Fusce a sapien vitae libero venenatis vehicula. Integer porttitor enim porta lectus. Sed nunc purus, lobortis vitae, consequat et, auctor dignissim, dolor. Mauris mollis.</i>
</blockquote>

produces:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit. Nullam sit amet ligula non nunc congue dictum. Nunc lobortis sem eu odio. Sed lobortis sapien a erat. Fusce a sapien vitae libero venenatis vehicula. Integer porttitor enim porta lectus. Sed nunc purus, lobortis vitae, consequat et, auctor dignissim, dolor. Mauris mollis.

And then you're back to unidented. (Can't help with the edu-speak gobbldygook, though.)

Okay, I don't understand that either, and I taught English.

It isn't really Engligh, that's why. It appears to be a combination of bureaucratese, executivish, marketingspeak, and lawyerese. English dialects of all four, but still...

My brain hurts now.

To be fair, my eyes glazed over as soon as I saw the word "outcomes" used as a direct object.

Maybe if you feed it into Babelfish a few times it will at least be funny.

Ooh. Maybe.

Happy birthday, by the way!

Thanks! :-)

I tried to read it again. Still no luck. Is it possible that this paragraph contains a SECRET CODE that is passed between spies who are working in your department?
